RG Store

This was in the Mattoon News paper Jan. 3, 2007, history of of R. G. Weber Store in Mattoon, Illinois.


This is a picture of RG Weber store in Mattoon, Illinois. His dad Gail had a hardware store before him. Here are some stories:
1. Dad at Christmas time would that toys and give them to the needed children...
2. I can remember when my dad sold worms. He keep them in the basement and I would have to feed leftover from we did not eat. He would give me a money if I would go out at night and find night crawers.
3. There was a upstairs at one time he had sporting goods upstairs and his dad had a hardware store downstairs. The last years he had sporting goods down stairs and the up stairs was a skating rink, but he had to stop it because it made too much noise the theater was next door and they complain about the noise.
4. When dad was upstairs he had a train deplay, he would sale trains from it, I love to play with it, had mountians, waterway, towns, etc. it was nice
5. the stairway on the way up was hand painted by_____. It had horse......need some help here also...
6 Dad use to buy 5 monkeys in Florida for a $100 dollars and bring up to Mattoon and sell them for a $100 each. He has a favorite monkey name Moe. He use to live with us in the house on south 18th street. He wore diaper all the time and run loose in the house.

7. During this time of the store dad had a cabin at Mattoon Lake. Dad, Jackie and Sallie were swimming above the Mattoon dam / spillway. Sallie accident fell over the dam and by the time Sallie got to the bottom of the dam dad was at the bottom to catch her.

8. Dad had five different stores. Gene and Jerry Harpsters running the store in Charleston and they were related and after they sold sporting good store they bought a propane gas business. Another store in Shelbyville, Illinois, another in Sullivan, another in Mt. Vernon and main one in Mattoon, Illinois

9. Dad would load up fishing tackle and head for Florida to sell after each Christmas...

10. I (Rich) can remember the time that Donnie and I work all day getting this boat ready to go, loaded up and started down the alley to go to Charleston, Illinois too waterski etc. Dad stop me and said that he had the boat solded. I always said if dad gave me anything he would take it back and sell it...

11. Gail Weber had the hardware store downstairs, Gail had three sons and one daughter. Gail offer the upstairs to RG Weber and he started the sporting good store. Dad brother Jack work for awhile then he went to work for a radio station as a diskjockey. George and Bernice went to California to work.

12. Jackie was going to take the monkey to school for her scince class, Jerry went by and pick her up and she had the monkey Moe with her, they pick up Patty Brown on the way to school. The got to school and park on west side of school, early Lou and they was sitting inside the car before school and Lou was talking etc and was teasing the monkey, the monkey was sitting on the front and back seat, the monkey jump straight up and starting shitting and jump and turn, shit was flying, Lou turn his back and did not think he got anything on him, then he was walking the hall talking telling everybody the story, Jerry went in and he saw he it running down his letter jack and did not know it...he was walking ...
